Noel has more than 30 years’ experience in plant molecular genetics. His research focus has been on genetic diversity, gene discovery and associated genomic analyses in pea. He has led some international Grain Legume projects (the EU FP6 Grain Legume Integrated Project, 2004 - 2008 and the CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes, 2013-2015). Noel was president of the European Grain Legumes association 2001 - 2004 and from 2013 to 2017 chaired the International Year of Pulses thematic area on Productivity and Environmental Sustainability. Most of Noel’s research career has been at the John Innes Centre (1997 - 2011 and since 2019), he was Professor of Crop Genetics at the University of Aberystwyth from 2011 to 2013 and held an honorary Professorship at the University of Auckland from 2015 to 2019.
